Mr.Roboto571985
What are your feelings towards Cyclorama and Big Bang Theory? I decided to try and listen to the carrot album last night, and I had to make myself get through it. It is just so bad. Not to mention the songs like Do things my way and Kiss your ass good bye, Bourgoeis Pig, are purely attacks on Dennis. However one gem on the album is a surprise song by JY called "These are the Times", it's too bad this wasn't done when Dennis was still in the band his vocals and keyboards, this has classic Styx all over it. As for Big Bag Theory, while not a bad album and has some good covers on it, I really did like I am the Walrus, however the better performance was on the CYO DVD, same thing with It Don't Make Sense. It really could have done without the SLOW remake of Blue Collar Man.
B. Miller
I know im gonna get some hate for this, but i actually liked some of Cyclorama. Some of the songs suck (heres looking at you Bourgeois Pig and Captain America). I wouldnt say this is an AMAZING album or anything, but i also dont hate it. I like some of the songs, and dislike some others, compared to other Styx albums this one gets the most 'skips' I love all Glens songs on here, they are the best on the album hands down, and the A Capella version of Fooling Yourself is just awesome. Yes I Can and Together are also pretty cool i think. Now Gowans work on here is not that great in my opinion, I love his solo works, and the stuff on here, i dont really care for. As for Big Bang, that wasnt too bad, ShawBlades Influence was much better, but theres some good ones on here. Considering their all popular covers, i cant really say if one sucks or not because they didnt write them anyway (I did like the hard rock take on Locomotive Breath) Haha, my personal favorite on this CD was Blue Collar Mad i liked that blues take on it, but i can see how others would think its a waste. BTW Kiss your ass goodbye was not written about Dennis, im not sure if that was a discussion here, or somewhere else i saw, but it was written about someone else Glen knew.
Boomchild
While I wouldn't say the carrot album was complete crap, it csertainly didn't have a Styx feel to it in my opinion. I thought some of the songs were OK but I have never listened to it more then twice and that is a first for any Styx album for me. As far as BBT, I never cared for tribute albums and most likely never will. The other thing is that here we have JY and TS talking about having someone in the band that wanted to control everything and they were unable to put out the types of songs that they wanted to do and when they finally get the chance to do so what do they do? Put out a tribute album. Tribute albums usually sell worse then an older bands album of new material. They even talk up the fact that the new line up was wrtiting new material together and poof nada, nothing.
Jasedontlie
My favorite song from both albums hands down is "Yes I Can" - but then again, Tommy is at his best when collaborates with a 2nd good song writer (Dennis, Jack, Glen) - so that stands to reason why this song is a stand out for me.
Ron
"Yes I Can" is good, but originally it was to be on the third Damn Yankees album "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye" is a good Glen song. I've heard him perform it solo. The only Styx-sounding song is "One With Everything"
Jasedontlie
and I've said it before - I'll say it again. A band is at its best when they all get together, work together, write together, record together. There are so many times you can pick up on someone else's ideas (say expand upon a guitar riff or vocal run) and just make it that much better. In today's way of making music - one does their part in one studio and another does there's in another studio. Too clinical, less "blood, sweat, and tears" put into the songs! B. Miller
I think One With Everything had a really good Styx feel to it, Gowan did really well with the Synth parts, and the drumming is rated one of the all time greatest in rock music i believe (From some drumming magazine, that one Todd is always winning awards from) Oh, and did anyone else notice that the main Synth line (the intro) is basically Snowblind with a different rhythm.
